The Center of Applied Technology North is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school serving students who attend the eight northern high schools in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Students may apply for CAT North during their 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade years for the opportunity to attend CAT North during the following school year.

Applications must be submitted by March 15th to be considered through the lottery process. We encourage students to explore program descriptions under the Career Institutes tab. Please note that late applications may be placed on a waitlist, and schedule changes are rarely possible due to limited program availability.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools provides transportation to and from CAT North. Students will attend CAT North during their scheduled class period(s) and will not miss any classes at their home high school.

Career Exploration

  • The Career Exploration Program is open to students entering 9th grade.

  • Students will select ten career areas of interest in order of preference and will be scheduled into four of those areas for their Career Exploration experience. While every effort is made to honor top choices, placement may occur in any available class.

  • Career Exploration classes are scheduled for first period on B days. This will serve as the student’s official class for that day and period.

Career Institutes

  • Career Institutes are open to students entering grades 10–12. The entry year may vary depending on specific program requirements.

  • Students who participated in Career Exploration must still apply to be considered for a Career Institute; however, prior participation is not required to apply.

  • Applicants may select up to four programs on the application but should only choose programs they are genuinely interested in attending.

  • Course schedules vary by program. CAT North School Counselors collaborate with counselors from feeder high schools to coordinate student schedules.

  • Students currently enrolled in a CAT North Career Institute who wish to continue in their program do not need to submit a new application. CAT North School Counselors will meet with these students to confirm their intent and placement. Please note that continuation in a program may be subject to the lottery process, depending on program capacity.
